Try Physical Therapy Before Having Surgery

There are a lot of reasons to consider physical therapy before electing to undergo surgery. One big plus is that it can help you prepare for the surgery (often called prehabbing) and have a speedier recovery. And even for some, physical therapy may eliminate the need for surgery altogether.

At A2 Physical Therapy in Tacoma, there are several treatment options — from massage to personal training, and spinal treatment and rehab, soft-tissue manipulation with tools, and cutting-edge technology like the NEUBIE (neuro-Bio-Electric Stimulator) that helps the body heal itself quicker. It’s the only one of its kind in the state and available exclusively at A2.

Some research indicates that 10 to 20 percent of surgeries might be unnecessary and people might find satisfactory outcomes when they try more conservative options — like physical therapy — first. That’s important because all surgeries come with some risk, so if you can avoid having one with an alternative treatment, that is preferable.

Of course, physical therapy can’t fix every health problem, and for some surgery is the best choice. However, exploring how physical therapy can help make the surgery go smoother, the recovery time go faster, or (fingers crossed) possibly avoided, is worth a conversation with your health care provider. At A2, getting patients strong and healthy is the ultimate goal and we have a lot of tools that just might help you avoid the operating room — and be feeling your best sooner.

"Before I started coming to A2 I was always tired and could barely pick up or carry my grandchildren a ½ block. After the first 6 weeks of working with Kristi I got a big surprise when I took my grandchildren to a festival and carried the youngest 4 blocks before she woke up enough to walk. I then picked her up and put her on my shoulders so she could see better without effort. I was amazed at how much strength I had gained in a short time. I continue to see improvement in my strength and I’m no longer tired all the time."

"Kristi gives me a great positive feeling; to feel good bout myself. I have never been able to keep up on a food journal- now its easy. My personal goals are to have a decreased pulse rate, be fit, and take care of my heart. I come in on Wednedays at 5 am. Sometimes its hard to ge tout of bed, but I know I am working with someone (Kristi) who I am accountable too. Kristi is always so pleasant and never makes me feel ashamed of myself. A2 is a great place, each person is so positive. You learn to feel better by getting your mind to feel better first…. Think positive! I love this place, I will recommend each personto A2 either for PT or personal training. You guys are #1!"

"Thanks so much - from the front desk, to my therapist Danny, to the owners. I felt supported by caring professionals while I recovered from my work related injuries. I felt encouraged to work hard to fully recover, and I feel like I have. Negotiating health care services can be overwhelming, but A2 made getting the care I needed straight forward. Thanks again for everything."
